Woodworker drilling into a cabinet box panel in a busy woodworking shop

By the MJC design team, Orlando. Updated November 2026.

Short answer: In Orlando’s humid climate, the cabinet box matters more than the door. Plywood boxes handle moisture and swelling better than particleboard, MDF makes a stable painted door but needs sealed edges, and solid wood looks great but moves with the seasons. The weak spots are the sink base, the dishwasher wall and the laundry room.

Why does humidity matter for kitchen cabinets in Orlando?

Central Florida kitchens live with moist air most of the year. Summer storms, long cooling seasons and steam from cooking all put water vapor into the air, and wood products absorb it. A cabinet that looks perfect on delivery day can show swollen edges, sticking doors or peeling finish a few years later if the material was chosen for a dry climate.

Humidity alone rarely ruins a cabinet. The damage usually comes from two things working together: moist air that keeps the material slightly swollen, and liquid water that reaches an unprotected edge. That is why the same material can last decades in one part of the kitchen and fail early in another.

Homes that sit closed for weeks are a special case. Vacation homes near the parks and second homes that stay empty in summer often run the air conditioning less, and indoor humidity climbs. Cabinets in those houses need materials and finishes that tolerate long humid stretches without anyone wiping a spill.

How do plywood, MDF, particleboard and solid wood compare?

Most kitchen cabinets combine two materials: one for the box (sides, bottom, back and shelves) and another for the doors and drawer fronts. The table below shows how each common option behaves in a humid kitchen.

MaterialWhere it is usedHow it handles humidityWatch out for
PlywoodCabinet boxes and shelvesThin wood layers glued in alternating directions resist swelling and keep holding screws after moisture exposureExposed edges need edge banding, and quality varies a lot by grade and core
MDFPainted doors, panels and drawer frontsStays flat when humidity changes and takes paint smoothly, which makes it a stable choice for painted doorsSwells if water reaches an unsealed edge or a chip in the finish, and it is heavy
ParticleboardBudget boxes and many ready-to-assemble cabinetsWorks in dry areas when every surface is covered by laminate or melamineSwells and crumbles once it gets wet and does not recover, and screw holes loosen after repairs
Solid woodDoor frames, face frames and trimStrong, repairable and can be refinishedExpands and contracts with the seasons, so wide flat panels can crack or warp

Solid wood movement is the reason most quality doors use a frame with a floating center panel. The panel sits in a groove and can expand and shrink without splitting the frame. A slab door made from one wide piece of solid wood is the riskiest choice for a humid kitchen.

Particleboard is the material most people mean when they say cheap cabinets did not last. It is not useless, but in a Florida kitchen it has very little margin for a slow leak. If you are comparing a ready-to-assemble set with a custom quote, our guide on custom vs. semi-custom vs. RTA cabinets explains what changes in the box.

Which doors and finishes hold up in humid kitchens?

The finish is the first barrier between the material and the air. A few points make a real difference in Central Florida:

Where do kitchen cabinets fail first?

In most Orlando kitchens, cabinet damage starts in the same few places:

  1. The sink base. A slow drip from the faucet, the drain or the dishwasher hose can soak the cabinet floor for weeks before anyone opens the doors. This is the single most common place for swelling.
  2. The panel next to the dishwasher. Each cycle releases hot steam when the door opens. Cabinets beside the dishwasher take that steam on their edges every day.
  3. Around the range and coffee station. Boiling pots, kettles and coffee makers push steam straight into the upper cabinets above them.
  4. The laundry room. Washers, dryers and utility sinks bring water and heat into a small room that often has poor ventilation.
  5. Outdoor kitchens and lanais. Indoor wood cabinets are not built for a screened lanai or an outdoor kitchen. Those spaces call for materials designed for outdoor exposure.

Bathrooms follow the same logic. A vanity sits next to a shower and a sink, so the box and the finish deserve the same attention as a sink base. Our page on custom bathroom vanities in Orlando covers that room in detail.

How can you protect cabinets from moisture?

How does MJC help you choose materials?

MJC builds custom cabinets to measure in its own shop at 5014 Forsyth Commerce Rd in Orlando, so the box, the doors and the finish are chosen for your kitchen instead of pulled from a catalog. At the design visit, the mobile showroom van brings box, door and finish samples to your home. The designer explains where each option makes sense in your layout, for example a different choice for the sink base than for a pantry wall.

Frequently asked questions

Is MDF OK for kitchen cabinets in Florida?

MDF works well for painted doors because it stays flat when humidity changes. The risk is water reaching an unsealed edge or a chip in the paint, so every side of the door has to be sealed and damaged spots should be touched up quickly.

Is plywood better than particleboard for cabinets in a humid climate?

For cabinet boxes, plywood usually lasts longer in humid kitchens because it resists swelling and keeps holding screws. Particleboard can work in dry areas when fully covered, but once it gets wet it swells and does not return to shape.

Can I use regular kitchen cabinets on a lanai or outdoor kitchen?

Indoor wood cabinets are not designed for outdoor exposure, even under a screen enclosure. Outdoor kitchens need materials made for rain, sun and constant humidity.

Why are my cabinet doors next to the dishwasher peeling?

Hot steam escapes every time the dishwasher opens, and it hits the edges of the nearby doors and panels. Vinyl wrapped doors are especially sensitive to that heat. Waiting a few minutes before opening the dishwasher and sealing the edges reduces the damage.

How do I know if my sink base has water damage?

Look for a soft or bubbled cabinet floor, dark stains, a musty smell or a bottom panel that sags. Press the floor of the cabinet near the drain. If it feels spongy, the material has absorbed water.
