Short answer: For most kitchens, yes. Soft-close hinges and drawer slides use a small damper that catches the door or drawer near the end of its travel and pulls it shut gently. You get less noise, less wear on boxes and finishes, and fewer pinched fingers. They cost more than standard hardware, and quality varies between brands.
How do soft-close hinges and drawers work?
A soft-close hinge is usually a concealed hinge with a damper, a small piston that resists movement. When the door is almost closed, the damper slows it down and the hinge spring finishes the close. Some hinges have the damper built into the hinge cup. Others use a separate damper that clips on next to the hinge.
Soft-close drawers work the same way through the slides. A mechanism at the back of each slide catches the drawer in the last part of its travel and pulls it closed under control. Slides come in two main types: side-mount slides, which are visible on the sides of the drawer box, and undermount slides, which are hidden under it.

What are the pros and cons?
| Factor | Standard hardware | Soft-close hardware |
|---|---|---|
| Closing | Depends on how hard you push | Same gentle close every time |
| Noise | Doors and drawers can slam | Close quietly |
| Wear on boxes and finish | Slamming loosens joints and chips paint | Less impact on doors, frames and drawer fronts |
| Upfront cost | Lower | Higher |
| Maintenance | Occasional hinge adjustment | Adjustment, and dampers can wear after years of heavy use |
Where soft-close earns its cost
- Heavy drawers. A drawer full of pots or a loaded trash pull-out closes under control instead of crashing into the box.
- Open floor plans. In Florida homes where the kitchen opens to the living room, a slamming drawer carries through the whole house.
- Homes with kids. A door that slows before it closes gives small fingers time to get out of the way.
- Painted cabinets. Painted doors chip at the edges when they hit the frame. A controlled close protects the finish.
The downsides
The first is cost. The second is adjustment: a damper that is too strong for a small, light door can stop it short of closing, and a hinge out of alignment can do the same. Some people also dislike the slower close on doors they use all day. Quality varies widely between hardware lines, so the brand and model matter more than the words soft-close on the box.
How much more do soft-close cabinets cost?
The difference depends on how many doors and drawers the kitchen has, the type of hinge, the type of slide and the brand. Undermount slides usually cost more than side-mount slides, and full-extension slides, which let a drawer open all the way, cost more than partial ones. Compared with cabinet boxes, doors and the countertop, hinges and slides are usually a smaller line in a kitchen budget. Ask for the hardware type to be listed by name in the quote, so two estimates can be compared fairly.
Can you add soft-close to existing cabinets?
- Doors with concealed hinges. These are often the easiest to upgrade, either by swapping to soft-close hinges of the same type or by adding clip-on dampers.
- Doors with exposed hinges. Add-on dampers mounted inside the frame can work, though the result is less consistent than a hinge designed for it.
- Drawers. New slides must match the drawer length and the space at each side. Switching to undermount slides usually means new drawer boxes, because undermount slides need a specific box design.
If the boxes are worn, swollen or out of square, new hardware will not fix them. Compare the options in cabinet refacing vs. replacing before spending on a retrofit.
How MJC handles this
At MJC, hinges, drawer slides and pulls are chosen with you during the free 3D design visit, in the same material selection step as the door style, finish and countertop. The detailed quote presents the costs line by line, so you can see what each hardware choice adds before deciding. Your custom kitchen cabinets are built to measure in our Orlando shop, and installation includes adjusting every hinge and drawer so doors close evenly. When comparing estimates from other companies, our list of questions to ask a cabinet maker helps you check what hardware each quote includes.
Frequently asked questions
Do soft-close hinges wear out?
The dampers can lose some resistance after years of heavy use, and a worn damper lets the door close faster. On most concealed hinges, the hinge or the damper can be replaced without changing the door.
Why does my soft-close door not close all the way?
The damper may be too strong for the size of the door, or the hinge may be out of alignment. Many hinges have adjustment screws, and some dampers have a strength setting. Try an adjustment before replacing parts.
Are soft-close drawers the same as full-extension drawers?
No. Soft-close describes how the drawer closes. Full extension describes how far it opens, all the way out so you can reach the back. Many slides offer both, and deep drawers benefit from both.
Do soft-close cabinets work with handle-free doors?
Handle-free kitchens often use push-to-open hardware, which works differently from soft-close. Some systems combine the two, so decide on handles or handle-free early in the design.
