MJC designs and builds custom kitchen islands in Orlando, with the storage, seating and appliances you choose. We draw the island in 3D with the aisles around it, build it to measure in our shop at 5014 Forsyth Commerce Rd and finish it to match your new cabinets, so it looks like part of the kitchen from day one.
What goes into a custom island
- Storage: deep drawers for pots and pans, a trash and recycling pull-out next to the prep area, and shallow cabinets on the seating side when the knee space allows.
- Seating: counter-height seats with enough width for each person.
- Appliances: a sink, a dishwasher, a beverage fridge or a microwave drawer, planned together with the plumbing and power they need.
- Finished back and ends: panels that match the cabinets, because in an open floor plan the back of the island faces the living room.
- Countertop: granite chosen from samples at your home.

How big should your island be?
The size of an island comes from the aisles around it, not from the island itself. The National Kitchen and Bath Association planning guidelines give the clearances most kitchen designers start from:
| Space | NKBA recommendation |
|---|---|
| Work aisle, one cook | At least 42 inches |
| Work aisle, more than one cook | At least 48 inches |
| Walkway with no work area | At least 36 inches |
| Counter width for each seat | 24 inches |
In the 3D design we show those clearances with the appliance doors open, so you can see whether the island fits before anything is built. The full math, with an example, is in our kitchen island size guide.
An island planned with the whole kitchen
An island earns its space when it is designed with the rest of the room: where the refrigerator opens, where the path to the lanai runs and where the pantry sits. That is why MJC draws it in the same 3D design as your custom kitchen cabinets and, when you want one, a custom pantry. For layout ideas, see kitchen layout ideas for Florida homes.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a custom kitchen island cost?
It depends on the length, the drawers, the appliances and the countertop, so the price comes from the 3D design and a written quote. When the island is part of a full kitchen, complete custom kitchens with MJC start at $15,000.
Can the island have a sink or a dishwasher?
Yes, when water and drain lines can reach that spot. It is decided at the design stage, because running plumbing to an island adds work to the project.
Will the island match my new cabinets?
Yes. The island is built in the same Orlando shop as your cabinets, with the same doors and finish or with a second color if you want it to stand out.
Is the island design free?
Yes. We measure the kitchen and design the island in 3D at no cost.
